At the regular SWSC summer league meets, ribbons are earned by the 1st-6th or 1st-8th place finishers. A ribbon or an arm band is given to the heat winner. Each race is divided into heats based on the times submitted. The 6 and Under swimmers earn a ribbon for every race they participate in as a 6&U.
Often the swimmers who are making the biggest improvements are new or are challenging themselves to swim new events. This means they often are not rewarded with a ribbon. The Gold Coin Club rewards every swimmer on our team who improves at swim meets.
For every second a swimmer improves in a single event, they will earn a Gold Coin. At the end of summer awards party they can trade their coins for prizes! Kind of like Chuck E Cheese for swimmers!
Examples
7-8 year old swims their first meet and finishes the 25 freestyle in :55 seconds. At their next meet they swim the 25 freestyle again, improving their time and finish in :45. That means they have earned 10 Gold Coins to shop with at the end of summer. They continue to swim this event and drop time all summer earning 25 Gold Coins for just this one event.
A 15 year old doesn't like the 100 Butterfly. They are pretty fast in their other events and usually earn ribbons. But they really like the fun stuff they can shop for at the awards party. So they decide to work hard and improve their 100 Butterfly time because they know they will earn the most coins by lowering their Butterfly time.
The Gold Coin Club rewards time improvements. "Cutting time" or having a new "Personal Best" is a hard concept because it does not have a physical reward. Each coin represents improvement.
When swimmers are new or younger they will often earn lots of gold coins and few ribbons. When swimmers become faster they typically earn ribbons and it becomes harder to earn gold coins.
Questions
Do we have to participate in meets to earn gold coins?
Yes
Why didn't my child earn a gold coin after their first meet?
To compare times they need to swim at least 2 summer league meets.
Can they earn coins in all their events?
They can earn coins in all their individual events. Coins can not be earned for relays.
How does my child collect their coins?
Each child has an awards file at the pool. A week or so after a meet, the improvements will be figured and the coins will be put in a Ziploc bag in their file.
